Duck Egg Blue with White wash finish Sideboard

I have been trying different paint finishes with the Voodoo Molly Vintage paint to see what different looks I can get with it. This week I completed this lovely old sideboard, which had a pretty boring, no-body-wants-me look to it when I picked it up. Here she is.

I knew she would look good in a colour but as she was a sideboard which could end up in any room I wanted her to have a neutral look as well. Here is her after pic.

I did 2 coats of Voodoo Molly Vintage Duck Egg with light sanding in between. No sealer was required as her original finish was in excellent condition, lucky me! Then I used a mix of 2 parts water to 1 part Antique White vintage paint and used this as a wash all over her. I worked in small areas, painting it all over the dry duckegg paint , then getting my clean cloth, wiped it back. This created a very subtle wash, very even so she ended up as a soft Duck egg with depth. I think this colour suits and I am very happy with how easy this was to do with the vintage paints.

Once completed she has some lovely detail showing through that was lost when she was mahogany colour. I did a little distressing to highlight this and then kept it very simple with vintage metal hardware and a poly finish so she was durable.

Voodoo Molly Vintage Duck Egg & Antique White Desk

We have been playing around a lot with the new vintage paint that we are stocking from Voodoo Molly.

When I found this old unloved desk in an Op Shop I already had visions of it as a two tone unit. After much sanding  as it had very old loose varnish I applied Vintage paint in Duck Egg to the carcass and Antique White to the drawers. 

A tiny bit of distressing and antiquing and then two coats of vintage semi gloss poly finished her off. The knobs are all original, just cleaned and painted in a black - silver. Even the teenagers thought she was beautiful in the end. I love a happy ending!

Another custom mix Duck Egg Blue transformation

I love this custom mix Duck Egg Blue mix and as it has so much depth to the colour I really like to paint it on a piece with clean simple lines. This is an op shopped solid wood chest which had huge ugly yellow and silver plastic knobs on it originally! She was in excellent condition so only took a small amount of prep work, a smooth chalk paint job, subtle distressing and some clear wax to finish. The knobs got changed out for some tiny crystal ones.

Old Sconce Lights refinished in chalk paint

I love it when a plan comes together and I had a plan for these lights right from the first time I saw them. They were horrible old outside beige lights made from plastic stuff and metal.

I took them apart and got a bunch of chalk paint colours together in a plastic plate and went to work brushing on clean paint and mixed paint, until I had the verdigris look I was aiming for.

Then we put them back together and installed them on the gallery wall. I love how they turned out, looking like old aged metal and I am amazed again at what this paint can achieve. I hope you like them and you will get to see them if you visit us at the gallery on Friday afternoons!

Queen Anne Tall boy painted in custom Duck Egg Blue

This is one of my most favourite colours to paint with, it is a custom mix of Duck Egg blue chalk paint. 

Here is my secret recipe : I layer an olive or dark green chalk paint on my piece first and then one layer of Duck Egg Blue chalk paint. When I distress I make sure I go through to the wood and not the green, as I want the dark wood to peak though and the green to give a depth to the colour on the piece. To finish one layer of clear wax. I hope you like it. 

Crystal pulls - another favourite

Another favourite is crystal knobs or pulls on a Queen Anne piece, I love how they add that little bit of bling ( everyone needs some bling in their life, admit it!) that dress a piece up a bit.

I'm not sure about you but I seem to get into phases where I really like one colour and I have several projects that I swap around the order I was going to paint them in just because I like a certain colour at the time.

My current fav is Annie Sloan Duck Egg Blue, on some projects it comes out with a little green through it and on others it is a beautiful blue, depending on how you distress or sand back your pieces you can also get variations, which I think are appealing.

Here is a cute little sideboard I have just refurbished and completed.
This piece had really- really ugly sticky out handles on the cupboard doors which looked like gnarled up hands, not pretty at all, but they were attached to a metal face plate which I quite liked. So I managed to knock the handles off and decided to paint over the face plates for some extra detail. Then I added some plain little black knobs to open the cupboards with. As this piece had a lot of detail in it already I only distressed it slightly otherwise it may have ended up looking over done.
